The first clue should have been when they began living together in a fixer before they were married. They were getting a deal on the rent in exchange for some painting and dry wall work.
The landlord came by to ask for the receipts for the construction materials. Jack looked at Kristie, “I thought you were keeping track of all that?” Without any prompting beforehand. No explanation. Just piled it on her. That’s why they shouldn’t have gone into business together.
But over the years, in spite of separate finances, separate checking accounts, separate tax returns… in spite of all this, they kept being attracted not only to each other, but to going into various businesses together as if none of these recurring problems would reoccur.
Business after business failed or faltered, but they kept on trying… ever hopeful.
