Beevis and Butthead

Back in the day when Beevis and Butthead ruled MTV, Mrs. Lu  was a middle school teacher.  She used to watch Beevis and Butthead and  MTV especially to keep up with youthful trends… and plus, to be honest, she actually thought they were funny.

So, in one episode the boys go to get their hair washed and cut.  The hair dresser is a gorgeous buxom blond in a low cut and revealing uniform.  Butthead is getting his hair washed while Beevis sits waiting for his turn.  Butthead looks down at the hair dresser’s ample cleavage and says to Beevis, “I have seen the mountains and it is good.”

During this era Mrs. Lu had one of the most fun and challenging classes of her career. It was a huge class, 36 kids including gifted and talented, special ed, and an autistic kid who grunted and moaned through-out the day.

She also had various assorted aides, observers, and specialists visiting the classroom making the total population over 40 people on any given day.  During these years she had many gifted and talented students along with the most needy and difficult kids. Life with 12, 13 and 14 year olds pretty much brought her to the end of her rope that year.  But there were many humorous moments too.

For management purposes she divided the class up into six tables of six.  These were based on the cooperative group model with a leader, a co-leader, an art expert, a language expert, a math expert,  an average student, a student needing help, and a bell ringer.  Some students played multiple roles.  Thankfully about a third of the class left for some part of the day to take special classes, speech, tutoring, advanced math, etc.

On this particular day Mrs. Lu was teaching math.  She had already given the lesson and was patrolling the room to check on the students’ progress and help individuals if needed.  She loved to dress up for class.  She had many different professional outfits. That day she was wearing a lovely flowered dress with a modest v-neck and a ruffled collar.  She loved wearing that feminine flowing dress and did not consider the style to be in any way provocative or she would not have worn it.

She bent down to help a skinny Beevis type with the steps in the formula A2+B2=C2. He looked at her and then looked at the curly haired Butthead type in the group next to him and said, “I have seen the mountains… and it is good.”

It was all Mrs. Lu could do to keep from bursting into a guffaw.  She never wore that dress again… Heh, heh.
