She finally realized that she had been raised to be an American Geisha. Someone who could sing, dance, act, write poetry, host a party, play golf and tennis, and give good head. She was being prepped to become the college educated wife of a lawyer. A beautiful companion to a suit who would most likely cheat on her and then she would cheat on him with all of his friends.
Whether it worked out or not was anybody’s guess. Some people get through the itch and stick it out to become best friends and companions later in life. She could see how arranged marriages worked. She knew her dad, a social climber himself, had his eye on several potential suitors for his eldest daughter.
All three of the young men had what he was looking for to further his own prestige. If he could just keep her down long enough to groom her into a little more submission…. It would never work. She hated tennis – too hot, too much running. She hated golf too – boring. She didn’t want to be controlled. She was independent, out spoken, rebellious.
She dated all the young men in turn and dismissed each of them.
#1 was the son of a large land owner who was also big in state and local politics. She liked him well enough – like a friend. He wrote her poetry. They played at The Pond and went horse back riding. She actually preferred the company of his aging father.
#2 was the son of a wealthy lawyer, but he was Jewish and required a Jewish wife. She began lessons in Judaism at the behest of her father. She enjoyed studying Judaism, but even her seductive feminine wiles could not separate this lad from his virginity. Soc Party
#3 was a charming handsome young man who worked at the golf course and had aspirations. He was fun. He had a cool car – a green Triumph Spitfire, and money to take her out (which she thought probably came from her father’s tips to him at the golf course). He also had a nice long schlong for her to play with. But, no, he wasn’t the one either.
Just a couple of hundred years ago she might have been married off to one of those guys as a matter of course. Her great grandmother had been ordered at the old maid age of nineteen to marry a man she had never met until their wedding day…. But American Geisha had other ideas. She chose for herself. She married a college drop out and lived happily ever after.
